Severn Trent Net Zero

Capturing a World-First Innovation

Some stories aren’t just worth telling — they need to be understood.

As Severn Trent continues to lead the way in environmental innovation, they developed a world-first approach to tackling emissions within the wastewater treatment process.

To communicate the significance of this work, there was a need to move beyond explanation and create a film that could clearly and confidently tell the story behind the innovation.

White Video was commissioned to produce a documentary-style film, capturing both the technology and the people behind it, bringing a complex process to life in a clear and engaging way.

The Brief.

Working with Severn Trent, the objective was to create a documentary that could showcase their position as a leader in tackling process emissions within the waste treatment sector.

The film needed to communicate complex technical information in a way that remained accessible, while still reflecting the scale and importance of the innovation.

It also needed to feel credible and grounded, balancing scientific detail with human storytelling to ensure it resonated with a wider audience.

Our Approach.

To achieve this, we developed a documentary-led approach that combined expert insight with real-world context.

Rather than relying purely on technical explanation, the film focused on the people behind the innovation — including engineers, scientists and those working on-site — helping to bring clarity and authenticity to the story.

This approach is key to effective documentary video production, allowing complex ideas to be communicated in a way that feels natural and engaging.

By combining interviews with real working environments, the film creates a clear narrative that moves between explanation and experience.

Production.

Filming took place across Severn Trent’s operational sites, capturing both the technology in action and the teams responsible for delivering it.

As a working industrial environment, production required careful coordination to ensure filming could take place safely alongside live operations. This included working around active processes, managing access to key areas and capturing footage without disrupting day-to-day activity.

We focused on capturing a mix of interviews and observational footage, allowing the innovation to be seen in context while maintaining a strong visual narrative throughout.

Post Production.

During post-production, the film was structured to balance clarity with storytelling.

Interview content was carefully shaped to ensure complex ideas were communicated in a clear and accessible way, supported by visual sequences that reinforced key points without overcomplicating the narrative.

The result is a documentary film that explains a highly technical process while maintaining a natural, engaging tone.

The Result.

The final film provides Severn Trent with a powerful way to communicate their world-first innovation to a broad audience.

By combining expert insight with real-world visuals, the documentary clearly demonstrates both the impact and importance of the work being carried out.

The project stands as a strong example of how documentary video production can be used to communicate complex environmental and technical subjects in a way that is both accessible and engaging.
